ROCKY START
FOUNDATION Donates $450,000 to Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit at UCI's University
Children's Hospital
In just five years, the Rocky
Start Foundation has donated $450,000 to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU) at UCI Medical Center. Funds purchase critical neonatal equipment
and provide support for the NICU at the medical center's University
Children's Hospital.
The foundation hosts the exclusive annual
golf event for University Children's Hospital, which is underwritten by
presenting sponsors Rohm Insurance and Moore Electric. The $140,000
donation for 2006 was raised through the 5th Annual Rocky Start Foundation
Charity Golf Tournament in September at the prestigious Arroyo Trabuco
Golf Club in Mission Viejo.
Following the golf tournament, the
event featured a dinner and program, with Kent French of the Mighty Ducks
Hockey Club reprising his role as guest emcee, and included a silent
auction and golfer awards. Highlighting the evening was the exciting live
auction, during which dinner guests and golfers alike sponsored individual
pieces of NICU equipment, raising $74,000 — all in about 10
minutes!
"We were overwhelmed once
again by the extraordinary generosity of all of Rocky Start's supporters
and advocates — they help save the lives of Southern California's tiniest
citizens" said Roscoe Moore, Rocky Start co-founder and CEO of Moore
Electrical Contracting, Inc. of Corona, Calif. "This event is a way to
'pay it forward' to the hundreds of babies treated in the NICU at UCI
Medical Center each year. Thanks to the expertise of the neonatal staff
there, our son Rocky is alive today; together, they are the inspiration
for the foundation and this annual golf tournament."
The Rocky
Start Foundation was created in 2002 by grateful parents, Roscoe and
Barbara Moore, and named for one of their twin sons, Rocky (so named
because of his "rocky" start in life). The foundation's sole purpose is
to raise funds and awareness for UCI's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a
lifeline for newborns who need next-generation healthcare today. "We experienced firsthand the anguish
of a child born with complications due to premature birth, something
thousands of other families face every year in Southern California,"
explained Barbara, Rocky's mother and co-founder of Rocky
Start.
"We're dedicated to ensuring that other families
receive the same premier treatment and care that we experienced during a
very traumatic time, while our son was in the care of the wonderful
physicians and nurses at the NICU at University Children's Hospital,"
added Barbara. "That is what this foundation is all about."
Now a
happy and healthy five-year-old, Rocky was born prematurely with serious
respiratory difficulties, complicated by a heart valve that did not close.
Critically ill at birth, UCI's Dr. Cherry Uy and the emergency NICU
transport team whisked him from a community hospital to the NICU at UCI
Medical Center. Following a 12-day fight-for-life, Rocky joined his twin
brother, Hank; sister, Anjolie; and parents at their Yorba Linda
home.
More than 500 children are cared for in the NICU at
University Children's Hospital every year. "We're proud that Rocky is a
testament to the miracles that take place in the NICU every day," added
Roscoe, Rocky's father.
"Barbara and Roscoe Moore demonstrate
their gratitude as parents in both words and deeds," commented Dr. Feizal
Waffarn, Chief of the Department of Pediatrics and one of Rocky's doctors
in the NICU. Their considerable contributions are both intangible and
tangible. The intangible is the sheer joy in the NICU when staff sees the
happy faces of grateful parents and healthy "graduates." Self-evident is
the tangible contribution of "the gift that keeps on giving," UCI's very
own Rocky Start Foundation.
The foundation purchases
state-of-the-art equipment, designed to minimize the stresses of critical
care on the smallest, most critically ill infants at UCI Medical Center.
"This is the one charity golf tournament that will impact the lives of
hundreds of babies in Southern California, right here and right now,"
declared Barbara.
