Rocky Start Foundation Golfer Dave Shutts in Charitable Mood

The prize was earned by Dave Shutts, claimed temporarily by some and permanently by one.

Shutts, who lives in Yorba Linda, got a hole-in-one during the Rocky Start Foundation's charity golf tournament on Sept. 25 at Black Gold Golf Club in Yorba Linda.

The tournament raised $55,000 for University Children's Hospital at the UCI Medical Center. Shutts walked away with an award nearly as valuable.

His prize for sinking the ace at the 10th hole - from 154 yards with an 8-iron - was a new Mercedes Benz C-240, valued at about $37,000.

"I was in absolute shock," Shutts said. "I've played 24 years, and it is the first shot that went where I wanted it to go."

The ball hit about 3 feet in front of the hole, bounced once and rolled into the cup as Shutts and his playing partners watched.

While Shutts stood in disbelief, his three partners celebrated wildly, and Shutts thought he knew why.

"Before we hit, somebody said, 'If one of us makes it, we'll split it'" he said. "I was absolutely ready to sell it and split the money."

The other members said the prize was Shutts', and he went home to tell his wife, Monica, who promptly took ownership of the car.

"I think I will get to drive it to get it washed and the oil changed." Shutts said. "I gave her the car."

The couple is celebrating their 21st wedding anniversary Oct. 21 and the car made for an early present.

But Shutts is planning on getting a little more mileage out of it.

"I am going to milk this for all it's worth," he said, laughing. "She asked me to clean the garage last weekend and I ultimately did it, but I was like, 'Honey, you're going to make me clean the garage? I just won you a Mercedes.'"
